Destruction of rainforest accelerates despite outcry

Despite some optimistic noises in the recent past, rain forest destruction in Brazil appears to be accelerating, according to scientists with the Brazlian agency that monitors the Amazon Basin. The Brazilian government had been claiming progress, but findings like this undermine the happy talk, already hotly disputed by environmentalists. The culprits are familiar: illegal logging, soy farming, biofuels, and cattle ranching. All of these are stoked by market forces outside Brazil. From the Independent (UK).
