Boy dies in rains in Guatemala

Fox News Latino: A 6-year-old boy became the first fatality of the 2012 rainy season in Guatemala, the Conred emergency management agency said Wednesday. The child died Tuesday when a mudslide tore through a home in Choacorral, a hamlet in the northwestern province of Quiche.

Two other people were injured in the same incident, Conred said, without providing further details. Elsewhere, two families were forced to leave their flooded home in the town of San Jose Pinula, 22 kilometers (13 miles) southeast of the capital, Conred said.

The torrential rains in Guatemala are due to a low-pressure system located south of the Gulf of Tehuantepec in the Pacific Ocean, meteorological officials said. Guatemala's rainy season begins in May and runs through November.

The United Nations says Guatemala is particularly vulnerable to climate change-related flooding because of its abundance of rivers....
