Climate risk management capacity vital for Tanzania

Devota Mwachang 'a in IPP Media: The Director General of Tanzania Meteorological Agency (TMA) Dr. Agnes Kijazi has said that the prevalence of malaria was caused by weather shifts tied to climatic changes.

Talking to a national stakeholders consultative conference on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam, she said that the malaria threat will be eradicated if development programmes are well designed with national and local actors playing a key role in the planning and implementation of climate risk management.

The TMA was making a presentation on the conference theme, for a global framework of a climate services adaptation programme in Africa.  The objectives of the meeting among others was to identify institutional and operating needs, gaps and capabilities for climate services in agriculture, food security, health sectors as well as in   disaster risk reduction.

She made the remarks in place of the Minister for Transport, Dr. Harrison Mwakyembe, whose prepared speech affirmed  that objectives of the meeting were among others to identify institutional and operating needs, gaps and capabilities for climate services in the various earmarked sectors.

In Tanzania, weather related diseases such as malaria have continued to be among key killer diseases despite efforts by the government to prevent the scourge....
