Groundwater management in the Phillipines versus climate change
Business Mirror (Philippines): Citing urgent need for collective action toward groundwater management to help mitigate the effects of climate change, the Bureau of Soil and Water Management (BSWM) is eyeing to expand its Farmer Water Schools (FWS) to cover other municipalities outside Burgos and Pasuquin towns in Ilocos Norte.
The project, which officially started last month, will run up to June 2009. It is a one-of-its-kind training since the Farmers Field School (FFS) Integrated Pest Management/Kasakalikasan was put in place as a regular program of the Department of Agriculture (DA).
An innovative learning vehicle for sustainable water management, FWS is funded by the Australian Center for International Agricultural Research. “Enhancing Agricultural Production by Sustainable Use of Shallow Groundwater” initiated an orientation-cum-consultation workshop on the conduct of FWS.
BSWM executive director Dr. Silvino Tejada said FWS seeks to impart knowledge and skills to farmers on estimating groundwater balance that will serve as the basis for making critical, informed decisions through crop planning….
