Philippine lawmaker seeks to address effects of climate change

SunStar (Philippines): A lawmaker introduced a resolution seeking an inquiry into the current climate change and come up with programs to address its adverse effect on the environment. Representative Proceso J. Alcala (2nd District, Quezon), author of the measure, has expressed alarm over the deteriorating situation of many reservoirs in Luzon and flooding in many parts of the country.

“In our country, Binga Dam’s reservoir level has gone down by 10 meters, from 575 to 565 considering that it is supposed to be typhoon season these days. In the Guinsaugon tragedy, more than 1,000 were buried in mud and more typhoons to visit our country,” Alcala noted.

Alcala said there is urgency on the part of the government to take drastic steps to address the dreadful effects of global warming and climate change….Alcala added that only 18 percent of country’s forest cover remains, 44 percent of the coral reefs are under threat of the sedimentation, and mangrove forest have declined from 450,000 hectares in 1918 to less than 100,000 hectares in year 2000….
