Nigerian residents cry out from flooding

Comfort Onche And Catherine Agbo in AllAfrica.com via Leadership (Nigeria): Residents of Mararaba have cried out over the constant flooding they endure following every rainfall. Investigations revealed that the areas most affected are the streets between the Mararaba market and the popular Giza plaza situated opposite Abacha road, as well as the streets on either side the Federal Medical Centre's gate. Also, areas like Aso, Kabayi and Abdul-Abdul Filling Station are always flooded.

Many of the residents who were interviewed by LEADERSHIP said they are worried by the situation.

"Can you imagine that every year during the rainy season, our mind will not be at ease all because of flood. Whether it is a minor rainfall or big rainfall, most of our houses will be flooded, our properties will be destroyed," Mr Johnson Agi said.

…Meanwhile, the Social Development Secretariat of the FCDA has disclosed that 62 victims of the recent Kubwa flood have been camped temporarily at the Government Secondary School, Dutse dormitory from where they would receive relief materials from the government.

Secretary of the secretariat, Mr. Bala Adamu who made the disclosure, said that procurement of the relief materials had already commenced and the materials would soon be delivered to the victims. He advised people in the habit of illegal construction within the territory on flood plains and water ways to desist from the act, saying that if this is done, there would be no reason for floods….
