Typhoon Talas toll lifts to 17 in Japan
Sydney Morning Herald: Typhoon Talas dumped record rainfall in many areas of Japan, leaving 17 dead and 54 missing as swollen rivers swept away buildings and landslides crushed houses on Sunday. Evacuation orders and advisories have been issued to 460,000 people in western and central Japan as officials warned of flooding and mudslides.
One woman died and seven people were missing after two houses were swept away by a swollen river in Totsukawa village, Nara prefecture on Saturday night. A 73-year-old man was killed by a mudslide in the same village, broadcaster NHK said.
Since Tuesday, more than 1,800 millimetres of rainfall had been dumped in Kamikitayama village, Nara prefecture, which was about two thirds of the area's annual precipitation, NHK said. Rainfall of 50-70 mms per hour was forecast for some areas in the Kinki and Tokai regions on Sunday, the agency said....
