Public’s disregard for proper garbage disposal aggravates climate change in the Philippines
Venus H. Sarmiento in the Philippine Information Agency: The public’s disregard for proper garbage disposal and outright pollution of the environment aggravate climate change in the country, says a top aide of President Aquino. Neric Acosta, presidential adviser for environment protection, said the impact of climate change is so much felt now because apart from the greenhouse gases emitted in the air, people continue to throw garbage in the river systems which pollute the environment.
...Acosta said the weather used to be predictable but due to climate change, rains now pour during hot months. Hurricanes, drought and flooding are all manifestations of change in climate, he said. The government, he said, has enacted two laws in the last two years in response to this. The Climate Change Act and the National Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Act where the steps on handlings disasters are laid down.
The Climate Change Commission is also a creation of these laws, he added. Acosta said the environment and climate change cluster is a new addition to the clusters in the Aquino Cabinet because of the government’s recognition of the great impact of climate change considering that the Philippines is in the top five list of countries that are most vulnerable to climate change...
