Nigeria flood kills 1,000, displaces 258,000 others

AllAfrica.com via the Daily Independent (Lagos): National Emergency Management Agency has confirmed that the 2010 flood has brought the number of people displaced in Nigeria to 258,044 while about 1,555 lives were lost to cholera epidemic due to contamination of drinking water as result of the flooding.

Director General of the agency, Mohammed Sani-Sidi, made this known on Tuesday during a meeting with a delegation of World Bank from Washington, which is in the country to assess flood damages in the country.

Sani-Sidi, in release signed by Head, Public Relations, Yushau Shuaib, said that the climate change which is also known as global warming has become a reality in Nigeria, adding that flood also brought along the cholera epidemic due to the contamination of drinking water.

He said that as at September 20, the collated data from NEMA, other relevant stakeholders, including World Health Organisation (WHO), indicated that 20,656 cases have been recorded in 17 states and about 1,555 lives were lost….
